Tommi Antero Mäkinen syntyi 26, kesäkuuta vuonna 1964 Puuppolan maalaispitäjään. Perhe oli maanviljelijöitä, joten traktorit ja muut koneet tulivat Tommille tutuksi jo lapsuudessa. Hän auttoi isäänsä usein peltotöissä traktorin ratissa ja jopa voitti 14-vuotiaana junioreiden piirimestaruuden traktorikynnöstä, josta vei myöhemmin myös kolme Suomen mestaruutta.

Tommi Mäkinen Racing Oy auttoi Toyotaa sekä kehittämään kilpailukykyisen ralliauton että nykyisen erittäin vahvan Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team nimellä kulkevan tallin. Tommi Mäkinen henkilökohtaisesti johti näitä operaatiota korkeimmalla tasolla ja jo tallin toisena vuotena Toyota saavutti valmistajien mestaruuden.
