Symptoms of gliomas depend on which part of the central nervous system is affected. A brain glioma can cause headaches, vomiting, seizures, and cranial nerve disorders as a result of increased intracranial pressure. A glioma of the optic nerve can cause visual loss. Spinal cord gliomas can cause pain, weakness, or numbness in the extremities.

Pons glioma

A pontine glioma occurs in a most delicate area of the brainstem (the "pons"), which controls many critical functions, including breathing and blood pressure. Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, is an aggressive brain tumor that forms in the base of the brain.

Glioma is a general name for any tumour that arises from the supportive tissue called glia , which help keep the neurons in place and functioning well. Diffuse expansion of the pons with internal patchy enhancement, which extending into the medulla, midbrain (more on left side) and bilateral middle cerebellar peduncles.

Previously called DIPGs, diffuse midline gliomas are the second most common type of primary high grade brain tumour in children. If your child or a child you know has recently been diagnosed with a diffuse midline glioma, you may be worried about what this means. This is a natural way to feel.

Brain stem glioma. Glioma in the brain stem is very rare. The brain stem is the lowest part of the brain, that connects with the spinal cord. It controls body functions that we don’t usually think about such as breathing. Brain stem gliomas are more common in children than in adults.

Gliomas that occur in the midbrain and medulla (the top and bottom segments of the brainstem, respectively) are usually low grade (grade I). However, those that arise in the pons (the mid-portion of the brainstem) are usually grade IV tumors and typically grow much faster and progress more rapidly. Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG) are highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumors found at the base of the brain. They are glial tumors, meaning they arise from the brain's glial tissue — tissue made up of cells that help support and protect the brain's neurons.
